Starting as a pre-university student, Ebe Upton worked at IBM in the Warwick Development Group in 1995. During this period, he engaged in REXX and C programming under OS/2 and was involved in DB/2 database development. 

In December 1998, while in his third year at Cambridge, he founded Ideaworks3D. This company, which eventually grew to over 50 employees in London, focused on mobile games and middleware. He served as Founder and CTO until September 2001 when he relinquished control to return to academia.

In the first few months of 2004, he worked as a Visiting Researcher at Intel Corporation, focusing on research in ad-hoc networking and human-computer interaction.

A few months later, he founded Podfun, a lifestyle company that helped finance his PhD studies. He wrote and sold Java mobile games and licensed the underlying technology. He continued with Podfun till 2006.

Simultaneously, from 2004 to 2007, he served as Director of Studies in Computer Science at St John’s College, Cambridge. In this role, he was responsible for admissions and arranging all teaching for undergraduate students in the Computer Science Tripos.

During his 14-year tenure, he made significant contributions, including writing drivers for video and graphics hardware for VideoCore III in 2007, designing shader processor microarchitecture and elements of the graphics pipeline for VideoCore IV in 2009, and taking overall responsibility for VideoCore V multimedia architecture in 2010. From 2012 onwards, he oversaw the architecture of BCM270x-series application processors. Additionally, he chaired the Khronos OpenVG working.
