After the successful release and reception of the GPT models, Sam Altman’s OpenAI is working toward the next pinnacle of AI, Artificial Superintelligence, or ASI.
In a personal blog post, Altman talks about the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning in shaping the future of human society.
“It is possible that we will have superintelligence in a few thousand days (!); it may take longer, but I’m confident we’ll get there,” he says.
ASI is a highly sought technology that will completely change the technological world and how we interact with it. It is believed to be a level of intelligence far beyond the brightest human minds. You can think of it as an entity capable of solving complex problems, creating art, and advancing technology with unimaginable speed and precision. Its cognitive abilities would surpass human understanding, outperforming human intellect in every possible domain.
However, after decades of work, it still remains a hypothetical concept.
Hence, researchers and scientists, including the CEO of OpenAI, have been obsessed with the idea of finally developing ASI.
Superintelligence vs AGI: Which is More Powerful? Know Here!
“Technology brought us from the Stone Age to the Agricultural Age and then to the Industrial Age. From here, the path to the Intelligence Age is paved with compute, energy, and human will,” Sam Altman writes in his blog post.
“The dawn of the Intelligence Age is a momentous development with very complex and extremely high-stakes challenges. It will not be an entirely positive story, but the upside is so tremendous that we owe it to ourselves, and the future, to figure out how to navigate the risks in front of us,” he continues.
Sam Altman sees AI superintelligence as a force with limitless potential, which is capable of making a huge, transformative impact. He expects a future where AI can help solve climate challenges, explore other planets, and reveal the deeper secrets of physics. These goals show just how far AI could take us, as long as it is used responsibly.
In the blog post, he also says that the shift to an Intelligence Age will not happen all at once. However, he is confident that over time, ASI will progress gradually.
Just like how our grandfathers could have never fathomed the AI tools available now, the tools our children will have access to will allow them to accomplish things we cannot even picture right now.
Altman ends his blog post saying, “Many of the jobs we do today would have looked like trifling wastes of time to people a few hundred years ago, but nobody is looking back at the past, wishing they were a lamplighter. If a lamplighter could see the world today, he would think the prosperity all around him was unimaginable.”
