Prabhakar Raghavan began his career as a research staff member at IBM’s Thomas J. Watson Research Center after completing his PhD. In 1994, he was promoted to manager of the Theory of Computing group. 

A year later, he moved to IBM’s Almaden Research Center in Silicon Valley, where he led the Computer Science Principles and Methodologies department until 2000. His research team focused on algorithms, complexity theory, cryptography, and text mining, among other areas. 

During this period, he also served as a consulting professor at Stanford University, where his research team worked alongside another group that included Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who went on to create Google.
