While at Santa Clara, he was an active member of Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society, as well as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). 

Patrick Paul Gelsinger then advanced his studies at Stanford University, where he earned a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (MSEE, EE & CS) from 1983 to 1986.

Pat Gelsinger’s career began in 1979 at Intel, where he spent 30 years in various engineering and executive roles. Rising through the ranks, he became Intel’s first Chief Technology Officer (CTO) in 2000, serving in this role until 2005. 

During his tenure, led significant advancements at Intel. He led the development of the USB and Wi-Fi technologies. Also, Gelsinger played a crucial role as the architect of the original 80486 processor. He led 14 microprocessor programs and contributed significantly to the Intel® Core™ and Intel® Xeon® processor families. His work helped cement Intel’s leadership in microprocessor technology worldwide. 

After working at the company for thirty years, he left Intel. 

In 2009, Gelsinger joined EMC as President and Chief Operating Officer of the Information Infrastructure Products division. He oversaw the engineering and operations of information storage, data computing, backup and recovery, RSA security, and enterprise solutions. His role at EMC extended for three years as he drove growth and innovation in data management and security.

Then, for the next nine years, Gelsinger served as CEO of VMware. There he transformed the company into a global leader in cloud infrastructure, enterprise mobility, and cybersecurity. Under his leadership, VMware’s annual revenue nearly tripled. Moreover, Patrick Paul Gelsinger was recognized as America’s top CEO in 2019 in Glassdoor’s employee survey. His tenure saw VMware become a key player in cloud technology and cybersecurity solutions for enterprises worldwide.

In 2021, Gelsinger returned to Intel as Chief Executive officer to lead the company’s strategic direction and innovation initiatives. He has steered Intel’s focus back to its core mission of semiconductor leadership, investing in advanced manufacturing and aiming to re-establish Intel as a frontrunner in chip production. 

Also, in October 2022, he became Chair of the Board of Directors of Mobileye Global Inc., Intel’s autonomous driving technology subsidiary.

Gelsinger holds additional leadership roles outside Intel, serving as Chairman of the Board for Gloo since 2018 and Chairman of the Board for Transforming the Bay with Christ since 2014. He has also been active in advisory and industry groups, including the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee and various councils focused on technology and economic policy.

Over the past few months, Intel faced major budget cuts and layoffs, with over 2,000 jobs cut in the U.S. and 15,000 planned layoffs overall. The company also reduced benefits, like reimbursements for internet, phone, and travel expenses, to help manage costs. 

Now, in order to boost employee morale, the company announced that it is bringing back free coffee and tea for employees.

In other recent changes, CEO Patrick Paul Gelsinger announced a big shift to separate the company’s chip-manufacturing and design teams.
