Nvidia Unveils AI-Powered RTX Video HDR: Upgrade Your SDR Content on GPUs

Nvidia Introduces a groundbreaking feature, RTX Video HDR, expanding its suite of AI-powered enhancements for RTX GPU users. This new capability transforms standard dynamic range (SDR) videos into high dynamic range (HDR), enriching visual experiences on compatible monitors.

Nvidia, a pioneer in graphics technology, is rolling out an innovative feature for all RTX GPU owners called RTX Video HDR.

This new capability, building on the success of RTX Video Super Resolution, which upscales and sharpens web videos, employs artificial intelligence to convert SDR colour space videos into HDR, offering an enhanced viewing experience.

To take advantage of this feature, users need an HDR10-compatible monitor with HDR enabled in the Windows settings.

The release of RTX Video HDR coincides with the introduction of the RTX 4070 Ti Super, and users can access this feature through the 551.23 Game Ready driver release.

RTX Video Super resolution enhances and scales your streamed video up to 4K.

The application of RTX Video HDR is not limited to a specific browser, as it works seamlessly with popular browsers like Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome.

Testing on an HDR600 monitor revealed subtle yet noticeable improvements in colour detail for 4K YouTube videos that were not originally uploaded in HDR.

While the effects might be more pronounced on higher-quality HDR monitors, the enhancement was noticeable even on standard monitors, though it required toggling the feature on and off multiple times for a discernible difference.

How to enable RTX video HDR?

  1. Download and install the January Studio Driver.
  2. Ensure Windows HDR features are enabled by navigating to System > Display > HDR.
  3. Open the NVIDIA Control Panel and navigate to Adjust video image settings > RTX Video Enhancement — then enable HDR.

As with other AI-powered features from Nvidia, RTX Video HDR is exclusive to RTX cards, leveraging the tensor cores initially introduced in the RTX 20-series GPUs. Nvidia has consistently incorporated AI techniques in various aspects, such as the Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) system for improved gaming performance and image quality.

The company also introduced Deep Learning Dynamic Super Resolution (DLDSR) in 2022 to enhance image quality through rendering games at higher resolutions. Additionally, Nvidia Broadcast features an Eye Contact function that uses AI to simulate eye contact during video calls.

In addition to RTX Video HDR, the 551.23 driver release introduces support for Ultra Low Latency Mode in DirectX 12 games. This mode, beneficial for games lacking Nvidia Reflex support, directly reduces the render queue at the driver level, enhancing the gaming experience.

Nvidia continues to lead the way in GPU technology, integrating AI-powered features that not only impact gaming but also enhance video content for a more immersive and visually appealing experience. With RTX Video HDR, users can breathe new life into SDR videos, enjoying richer colours and improved details on compatible HDR monitors.
