Meta has announced the newest iteration of the Llama 3.1 Impact Grants for 2024 which will award a total of up to $2 million. The program is an initiative designed to leverage the potential of open-source AI technology, Llama 3.1, to address global social challenges. Meta is currently accepting proposals “that use the new features and capabilities of Llama 3.1 to explore how these tools can be deployed for economically and socially impactful projects.”

Open-source AI can improve various aspects of human life, including productivity, creativity, and well-being. The program believes that everyone should have access to this technology and that it should be used ethically and safely. 

The inaugural version of the grant was held in October 2023 and received more than 800 applications from 90+ countries. Here is what you need to know about the Llama 3.1 Impact Grants 2024.

Open Call for Proposals

The Llama 3.1 Impact Grants program is inviting applications from eligible organizations from all around the world. The applications need to address how to use Llama 3.1 to tackle social challenges in various fields, such as economic development, science, innovation, and public service. Meta says that applications with an emphasis on social impact will be given special consideration. The selected proposals will receive funding of up to $500,000.

Regional Events and Special Awards

To support the application process and encourage the innovative use of Llama 3.1, Meta will host a series of in-person and virtual events worldwide. These events will provide technical guidance, mentorship, and networking opportunities. They will include hackathons, workshops, and training sessions in various countries, including Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, and many others.

Participants in these events will be eligible for a specialized award of up to $100,000, in addition to the open-call award.

How to Apply?

Interested organizations can apply for the grant by submitting a proposal for how they plan to use Llama 3.1 to solve specific social challenges. Meta will review the applications for their potential impact, feasibility, and alignment with the program’s goals.

The last date of submission is November 22, 2024. Remember to submit your applications before then. You can use this link to apply for the 2024 grant.

Future Plans

The twenty finalists selected for the first Llama Impact Grants have submitted their final applications. The recipients of the inaugural grant will be announced in September, along with the winners of the Llama Impact Innovation Awards, which specifically focus on projects from Africa, the Middle East, Turkey, Asia Pacific, and Latin America.

Apart from the finalists, 70 runner-up teams from the initial grant program were invited to network and explore future collaboration opportunities at Meta’s first in-person Global Llama Community Summit.
