Who is David Salvagnini?

David Salvagnini is the Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer and Chief Data Officer of NASA. He has been with the premier space research agency since June 2023, and was recently appointed as the Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer by Bill Nelson. 

As the Chief AI Officer, his role is to bring synergies to important tasks, particularly in terms of ensuring data preparedness in response to transparent and responsible artificial intelligence.

Previously, he held the positions of Chief Architect and Director of the Intelligence Community Chief Information Officer (IC CIO) Architecture and Integration Group (AIG).

David Salvagnini began his career as the Chief Architect of the Intelligence Community Desktop Environment (IC DTE) in 2012. He was responsible for system engineering and program management in Reston, Virginia, United States. 

He then served as the Deputy Chief of Enterprise IT Operations and Cyber Services from 2015 to 2018 in Washington, D.C., overseeing cyber operations and IT services in the public sector. 

Following this role, Salvagnini worked as the Chief Data Officer, focusing on data analytics and strategic planning in Washington, D.C. 

He then held the position of Technical Director and Chief Information Officer at the United States Department of Defense from 2019 to 2023, managing IT services and emerging technologies in the federal government. 

Subsequently, he served as the Director of Architecture Integration Group and Chief Enterprise Architect at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence from 2021 to 2023, leading design thinking and data analytics efforts in Bethesda, Maryland. 

He retired from the Air Force as a Communications and Computer Systems Officer in May 2005 after having served in a variety of leadership assignments during his 21-year career.

Currently, Salvignini holds the position of NASA Chief Data Officer at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration since 2023, where he oversees data management and strategic planning in Washington, D.C.
