Artificial intelligence (AI) tools and models have entered almost every industry. They have transformed the digital landscape, from programming tools like Devin to AI video generators like Sora and Haiper. Sectors like healthcare, transportation, and defence benefit immensely from the integration of AI technologies. 

As a result, countries all around the world have started investing heavily in AI research and development. Visual Capitalist did a study using the previous ten years using data from Quide obtained through Stanford’s 2024 AI Index Report. The study highlighted 15 countries with the most AI startups. 

The study included startups founded between 2013 and 2023. Only companies were taken into consideration if they had secured private investment above $1.5 million.

15 Countries with the Most AI Startups

According to Visual Capitalist, the United States occupies the top spot with over five thousand startups working on artificial intelligence research and intelligence, followed by China and the United Kingdom. 

The US, China, and the UK are the top three countries with the most startups in AI. The United States is leading, with private AI investments totaling $335 billion between 2013 and 2023. AI firms in China raised $104 billion within the same period, whereas those in the United Kingdom raised $22 billion.

According to Visual Capitalist, private investment in the United States increased by 22% over 2022 levels. Meanwhile, investment declined in China (-44%) and the United Kingdom (-14.1%) during the same period.

  1. United States

The US has Silicon Valley, also called the heart of technological innovation, and is home to leading AI companies like OpenAI, Google, Meta, and Anthropic. The U.S. has secured $31 billion across 1,151 deals for AI initiatives in 2023 alone. Also, US President Joe Biden is going to announce Microsoft’s $3.3 billion investment to build a new artificial intelligence (AI) data centre in Racine.

Across the Pacific, China has emerged as the top contender in AI. It produced an astounding 47% of the world’s best AI researchers in 2022, a sharp rise from 29% in 2019. Tech companies like Tencent, Huawei, and Baidu are leading the country’s AI innovations, with releases like Tencent’s Hunyuan, Huawei’s Pangu, and Baidu’s Ernie AI model. The Chinese government is expected to invest $38.1 billion in AI by 2027.

The United Kingdom continues to be one of the top countries in AI advancements. Some of the most notable UK-based startups include DeepMind, Stability, and Darktrace. Recognizing the immense potential of AI, the UK government plans to invest in supercomputers and research facilities to strengthen the country’s AI capabilities. The UK’s artificial intelligence (AI) sector is predicted to grow to be worth over 4.5 billion pounds by 2024.

  1. Israel

Israel has emerged as one of the top nations for AI development, leaving behind countries like Japan, France, and India. The nation’s tech scene has attracted $11 billion in private investment. Deep Instinct, Hailo, AnyVision, and AI21 Labs are only a handful of the top artificial intelligence startups in Israel. With government backing, Israel aims to invest $8 million in advancing AI applications in Hebrew and Arabic.

Canada’s blooming AI research scene has attracted a total of $8.64 billion in investments. A few of the top AI players in Canada are Cohere, Scale AI, and Coveo. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared that the federal government will invest $2.4 billion to boost Canada’s artificial intelligence industry. The funding will be split among several initiatives aimed at accelerating employment creation in the AI and IT sectors and increasing corporate productivity.

The study also included details breaking down total private AI investment by emphasis area, revealing which areas are receiving the most money. 

Investments in AI are pouring into three main areas: infrastructure, research, and governance. The most significant funding goes to companies building AI applications. The second major focus is natural language processing (NLP), a technology that enables computers to understand and interpret human language. The third major focus area for investments in AI is data management.
