Christian Klein’s career at SAP began as a student in 1999, starting with roles in financial management. Between 2002 and 2003, he took on his first formal role in Business Unit Controlling for Active Global Support, focusing on SAP’s financial oversight in customer support. From 2004 to 2005, he advanced as a Controller for Global Service & Support Operations. By 2005, he was appointed Senior Controller on the Global Service & Support (GSS) Finance Team. There he contributed for three years to improving financial processes and streamlining support operations.

In 2008, Klein was promoted to Chief Controlling Officer (CCO) for Services and COO, holding this position until 2011. This role allowed him to lead major internal initiatives, focusing on optimizing financial planning and enhancing operational efficiency. His work continued as he became CCO of Products & Solutions. In this role, he supported product innovations and oversaw financial management within SAP’s solution-focused business areas.

In March 2012, Klein was appointed CFO of SAP Cloud and SuccessFactors, marking a move to SAP’s cloud business segment in the San Francisco Bay Area. Here, he managed financial and strategic operations during SAP’s critical shift to cloud-based solutions. 

Returning to Germany in 2013, he became Head of Corporate Controlling, responsible for Group Controlling and the Strategic Planning Team. By 2015, Klein advanced to Chief Controlling Officer, where he oversaw SAP’s financial performance and was instrumental in aligning business development with SAP’s growth strategy for 2015–2020.

In May 2016, Klein took on the role of Chief Operating Officer while still serving as Chief Controlling Officer until 2017, a period marked by his leadership in driving SAP’s “Run Simple” initiatives, which aimed to simplify internal processes and prepare SAP for its cloud and platform strategy. In January 2018, Klein’s remit expanded as Chief Operating Officer and Member of the Executive Board, where he led the Intelligent Enterprise Group and spearheaded the development of SAP’s core applications, including SAP S/4HANA and SAP Digital Supply Chain. This role, lasting until mid-2021, also involved overseeing product quality, IT infrastructure, and analytics, along with aligning digital innovations with SAP’s goals for customer success.

After briefly holding the position of Co-CEO in 2019, he was appointed sole CEO in April 2020. As CEO, Klein is focused on advancing SAP’s digital transformation and positioning SAP as a leader in enterprise software. 

In addition to his role at SAP, he joined the Supervisory Board of Adidas in August 2020, where he, to this day, contributes his expertise in corporate strategy and business operations.
