Dr. Andrew graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1997 with a triple major in computer science, statistics, and economics. He also worked at AT&T Bell Laboratories from 1996 to 1998, researching feature selection, model selection, and reinforcement learning.

In 1998, he earned his master’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. While he was at MIT, he created the first automatically indexed online search engine for academic papers for the public. It was a machine-learning-focused version of CiteSeerX/ResearchIndex.

At the University of California, Berkeley, he received a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in computer science in 2002 under the guidance of Michael I. Jordan. His popular thesis was titled “Shaping and Policy Search in Reinforcement Learning.”

Andrew Ng, the founder of DeepLearning.AI, founder and CEO of Landing AI, general partner at AI Fund, chairman and co-founder of Coursera, and adjunct professor at Stanford University’s Computer Science Department, began his career as an assistant professor in 2002.

Along with teaching an online machine learning course to over 100,000 students, he supervised the development of Stanford University’s primary MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) platform, which ultimately led to the creation of Coursera in 2011.
