India’s Ashwini Vaishnaw, Anil Kapoor Among Time’s 2024 Most Influential People in AI

Time Magazine's 2024 list of the most influential people in AI includes notable Indians like Ashwini Vaishnaw, Nandan Nilekani, and Anil Kapoor. These figures are recognized for their contributions to AI development, from spearheading India’s tech initiatives to safeguarding AI rights.

The most important AI figures for 2024 have been listed by Time Magazine. The most influential people in artificial intelligence (AI) are highlighted in this list. Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, is one of the notable Indians included in the list.

Time stated, “Under Vaishnaw’s leadership, the country hopes to become one of the top five nations for semiconductor manufacturing—a key component for modern AI systems—within the next five years.” The article highlighted Vaishwnaw’s involvement in spearheading India’s AI plan.

Many factories are now under construction. However, Vaishnaw has a long way to go before achieving these goals. Low private R&D investment and a dearth of advanced manufacturing ecosystems are major problems facing India’s tech industry. To generate the skilled labor required for cutting-edge AI and semiconductor development, its educational system is also catching up.

Anil Kapoor, a Bollywood actor, is included in Time’s 2024 list of the most important figures in artificial intelligence. According to Time, “Anil Kapoor won a historic victory over unauthorized AI use of his likeness in a New Delhi high court in September.” “It is the right of every actor to defend themselves,” Kapoor stated to Variety.

The actor, who acted in several Bollywood films and the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire, took up the issue after a lot of deformed emojis, gifs, and videos with his appearance started making the rounds on the internet.

Co-founder of Infosys Nandan Nilekani is accompanied by actor Anil Kapoor and Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Time described Nilekani as “India’s Bill Gates,” a wealthy co-founder of Infosys who has spent fifteen years in and out of government building digital public infrastructure for the most populous nation in the world.

Nilekani, 69, is hopeful about AI’s potential, and, like many other tech billionaires, he has ideas about how to make sure the benefits of the technology are shared equitably.

Microsoft Research India’s Principal Researcher Kalika Bali was also included in the Time 100 Most Influential People in AI list. Bali is working with Microsoft Research, the large tech company’s research and development division, to make sure that the AI surge includes underrepresented languages. She is working on a project with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation where she is creating “gender intentional” datasets in five Indian languages that account for more than one billion speakers of those languages combined.
