Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang inaugurated the greatest sovereign AI supercomputer in Denmark this week.
The Danish Center for AI Innovation (DCAI), established by the Novo Nordisk Foundation and the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark, is responsible for operating the Gefion system, named after the Norse goddess of agriculture.
The Atos Group firm Eviden installed the supercomputer housed at a Digital Realty data center in Copenhagen.
Gefion consists of 191 DGX H100 servers with 382 Intel Xeon Platinum CPUs and 1,528 Nvidia H100 Tensor Core GPUs connected over Quantum 2 InfiniBand.

Up until now, Denmark lacked GPU-accelerated supercomputers. After extensive consultation with pertinent parties nationwide, it was determined that a major obstacle to advancement in the otherwise flourishing AI-based research ecosystem in Denmark is access to computational capacity.
“Gefion will be an intelligence factory.” According to Huang of Nvidia, “This is a new industry that never existed before.” It is situated above the IT sector. We are creating something essentially novel.
“What country can afford not to have this infrastructure? Just as every country knows that it has communications, transportation, healthcare, and fundamental infrastructures, the manufacturing of intelligence must undoubtedly be a part of any nation’s fundamental infrastructure,” he continued. It is quite amazing that Denmark is one of the few nations in the world that has started down this path.
The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) is currently preparing Gefion for usage, with a pilot project scheduled to test the technology initially. Forecast times are anticipated to be shortened from hours to minutes. To know the complete list of projects, click here.
Gefion will also be used for large-scale distributed modeling of quantum computer circuits by researchers at the University of Copenhagen.

Additionally, Novo Nordisk, Novonesis, the University of Copenhagen, and the Technical University of Denmark will work together to develop a multi-modal genomic foundation model for findings in vaccine design and disease mutation analysis.
