What is GPAI Summit 2023: Celebrating AI and Indian talent

The Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence or GPAI (Gee-Pay) is an international and multistakeholder initiative to guide the responsible development and use of artificial intelligence consistent with human rights, fundamental freedoms, and shared democratic values, as reflected in the OECD Recommendation on AI.

India will host the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit 2023  from December 12 to December 14. The GPAI is a forum of 28 nations and the European Union working together to understand the challenges and opportunities of artificial intelligence, or AI, and to promote its responsible evolution. “India’s approach has been to enable a universal understanding and a conducive environment, steering the use of AI towards the betterment of humanity. In this regard, forums such as the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI), of which India is a co-founder, are crucial. The GPAI brings along 28 Member countries and the EU as its members to guide the responsible development and use of AI,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a post on LinkedIn.

“As the Lead Chair of the GPAI, India reaffirms its commitment to harnessing technology, particularly AI, for the welfare of people, ensuring that nations of the Global South are not the last to reap its benefits. India is dedicated to clearing the path for a regulatory framework that ensures Safe and Trusted AI, bringing all nations together for widespread and enduring implementation,” PM Modi said in the post. 

When GPAI was launched: A Brief History and What is the Name GPAI Members

GPAI was launched in June 2020 with 15 members. In the beginning, GPAI had only members from G7 countries. But today, GPAI has  25 members which include Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union.

What is the purpose of GPAI: The Ideology behind Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence

  • Fostering a digital ecosystem for AI: Governments should foster the development of, and access to, a digital ecosystem for trustworthy AI. Such an ecosystem includes digital technologies and infrastructure, and mechanisms for sharing AI knowledge, as appropriate.
  • Building human capacity and preparing for labour market transformation: Governments should work closely with stakeholders to prepare for the transformation of the world of work and society. They should empower people to effectively use and interact with AI systems across the breadth of applications by equipping them with the necessary skills.
  • International cooperation for trustworthy AI: Governments, including developing countries and stakeholders, should actively cooperate to advance these principles and to progress on responsible stewardship of trustworthy AI. Download the official Documents on GPAI

Annual GPAI Summit, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is organising a Global AI Expo. If any organisation (educational institutions, companies, start-ups, MSMEs) is at the forefront of AI innovation and has developed technology that has the potential to benefit society and address critical global challenges, are invited to participate in exhibiting work to a global audience of industry leaders, policymakers, thought leaders, domain experts, fellow innovators and institutions, start-ups, and other stakeholders from 29 countries.
