Threads App Hits 100 Million Users in Less Than a Week

Threads, Instagram’s latest app, has achieved a remarkable feat by surpassing 100 million users in an astonishingly short period of time, outpacing even the rapid growth of ChatGPT. 

While OpenAI’s chatbot took two months to reach the same milestone, Threads accomplished it within a matter of days since its launch on Wednesday

The precise count of users can be accessed through the Instagram app, which actively tracks the size of the Threads user base.

Milestones

Threads made an instant impact, quickly gaining popularity. Within the initial two hours of its launch, it attracted 2 million users, and the numbers continued to rise steadily, reaching 5 million, 10 million, 30 million, and eventually 70 million users. 

The overwhelming success of the app’s release has exceeded the expectations of CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who expressed his astonishment on Friday.

Furthermore, users are not only signing up but also actively engaging with the app. According to my colleague Alex Heath’s report on Thursday, the app has already witnessed over 95 million posts and 190 million likes shared among its users.

Similarly, Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, shared a post acknowledging the achievement and highlighting that it took a mere five days to reach 100 million users:

In response to the rapid growth of its competitor app Threads, Twitter is contemplating taking legal action against Meta

The company’s lawyer levied allegations against Mr Zuckerberg, accusing him of “systematic, wilful, and unlawful misappropriation of Twitter’s trade secrets and other intellectual property” to create Threads.

Twitter has alleged that Meta recruited former employees who possess and maintain access to Twitter’s trade secrets and other extremely confidential information. Twitter’s Elon Musk said “Competition is fine, cheating is not”- However, Meta has refuted these claims.

Further to this Adam Mossari said on Threads: “The goal isn’t to replace Twitter. The goal is to create a public square for communities on Instagram that never really embraced Twitter and for communities on Twitter (and other platforms) that are interested in a less angry place for conversations, but not all of Twitter.

Politics and hard news are inevitably going to show up on Threads – they have on Instagram as well to some extent – but we’re not going to do anything to encourage those verticals.”
