Palworld, a survival adventure game developed by the relatively small Japanese studio Pocketpair, has emerged as a surprise hit in 2024. It has taken the gaming world by storm, selling 6 million copies within just four days of its January 18 release. This unexpected success is challenging the notion that only massive, highly funded games can dominate the industry.
Palworld falls under the survival adventure genre, where players navigate inhospitable open-world environments, focusing on elements like finding food, building shelters, and engaging in combat. The core of Palworld is the “Pals,” over 100 cute creatures with unique abilities that players can capture and use in combat or put to work in their base for crafting. The game involves exploration, resource gathering, and careful management of hunger levels.
The game is set in the Palpagos Islands, offering lush landscapes and various enemy factions to combat. Players must balance farming, cooking, and resource gathering while keeping an eye on hunger levels. The combat mechanics involve using captured “Pals”, and unlocking crafting recipes as players progress through a diverse technology tree. Palworld allows both solo play and online multiplayer for up to 32 “pal tamers’ in the online PC version.

Palworld’s appeal lies in its humor, silliness, and oddly captivating gameplay. Many see it as a refreshing departure from the stagnation that some feel has affected long-running series like Pokémon. The game quickly gained popularity on streaming platforms, becoming the number-one game on Twitch within a day of its release.
However, Palworld has not been without controversy. Some developers accuse Pocketpair of plagiarism, citing similarities in creature designs to Pokémon. The use of tropes from other successful survival games, particularly Ark and Rust, has also sparked debates. While the creators claim the game has been checked against legal requirements, former Pokémon Company legal team manager Don McGowan dismisses it as “usual ripoff nonsense.”
Critics question whether Pocketpair used AI-generated art without disclosure, but no concrete evidence has emerged. The game is still in development, with an Early Access version available on Steam for £25. A preview version is also accessible on Xbox, albeit with limitations compared to the PC version.
Palworld’s unexpected success highlights the gaming community’s appetite for innovative, quirky experiences, even from smaller studios challenging industry giants. Whether the controversy surrounding its alleged similarities to Pokémon will impact its long-term success remains to be seen, but for now, Palworld has firmly secured its place as a standout contender in the gaming landscape of 2024.
