What is AMD Instinct MI300X AI Chip: An Alternative to Nvidia

Tech giants Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI are turning to AMD's Instinct MI300X AI chip, signalling a shift from Nvidia. AMD aims to compete on performance and price, eyeing a share in the projected $400 billion AI chip market by 2027.

In a significant move, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI have opened their intention to utilise AMD’s cutting-edge AI chip, the Instinct MI300X. This development underscores a growing trend among technology companies to explore options beyond Nvidia’s costly graphics processors, which have traditionally played a crucial role in the development and deployment of AI applications, including OpenAI’s renowned ChatGPT.

The Instinct MI300X, scheduled to begin shipping early next year, could potentially reduce costs associated with AI model development if it proves to be both high-performing and cost-effective. AMD’s CEO, Lisa Su, projected a booming market for AI chips, estimating a $400 billion industry by 2027, expressing optimism about AMD’s significant role therein.

Lisa Su emphasised the growing interest in substantial computing power and large GPUs for cloud-based AI applications. The Instinct MI300X features a cutting-edge architecture and 192GB of high-performance HBM3 memory, facilitating faster data transfer and accommodating larger AI models.  Su directly compared the MI300X to Nvidia’s main AI GPU, the H100, highlighting the performance gains and improved user experience. The main challenge for AMD lies in convincing companies entrenched in Nvidia’s ecosystem to invest the time and resources required to adopt a new GPU supplier. Su acknowledged this hurdle, stating, “It takes work to adopt AMD.” To address a critical shortcoming, AMD has enhanced its software suite, ROCm, to compete with Nvidia’s CUDA software, which is an industry standard among AI developers.

Pricing will also play a crucial role in the adoption of AMD’s MI300X, as Nvidia’s chips can cost around $40,000 each. Su emphasised that AMD’s chip must be competitively priced in terms of both purchase and operational costs to sway customers away from Nvidia.

AMD revealed that it has already secured commitments from major companies hungry for GPUs, with Meta and Microsoft being the top purchasers of Nvidia H100 GPUs in 2023. Meta plans to use MI300X GPUs for AI inference workloads, including processing AI stickers, image editing, and operating its assistant. Microsoft’s CTO, Kevin Scott, announced plans to offer access to MI300X chips through its Azure web service, and Oracle’s cloud will also integrate these chips.

While AMD is not forecasting massive sales for the MI300X yet, projecting around $2 billion in total data centre GPU revenue in 2024, the company believes the total market for AI GPUs could surge to $400 billion over the next four years. AMD’s optimistic outlook underscores the high expectations and demand for high-end AI chips, positioning the company as a formidable player in the evolving AI chip market. Su suggested that while Nvidia currently dominates the AI chip market, AMD aims to secure a significant share, anticipating a robust market exceeding $400 billion by 2027.
