OpenAI Crisis deepens after Altman and Sutskever meeting

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, logged into a video call with Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI’s Chief Scientist. But when the call started, Altman saw that Sutskever was not alone — he was virtually flanked by OpenAI’s three independent board members. The virtual meeting ended within 15 minutes. After that Altman declared war on OpenAI’s board members. 

The crisis on OpenAI deepens after this episode of Sam Altman meeting with Ilya Sutskever who was flanked by independent board members. There are things still unknown regarding the OpenAI leadership crisis after the reinstatement of Altman as a CEO after being fired by the board members. 

OpenAI’s chaotic situation and disagreement among board members questioning the cause and the future of Artificial Intelligence. Many board members believed that Altman had been dishonest and should no longer lead a company that was driving the AI race. 

The board members urged Altamn to support an interim CEO which he assured them that he would. But within the hours Altman changed his mind and declared war on OpenAI’s board. 

The altercation between OpenAI CEO and board members deepens the crisis and puts a question mark on future proliferation. According to the article published in the New York Times, “OpenAI’s chaos has raised new questions about the people and companies behind the AI revolution. If the world’s premier AI startup can so easily plunge into crisis over backbiting behaviour and slippery ideas of wrongdoing, can it be trusted to advance a technology that may have untold effects on billions of people? ” 

The  New York Times report also says, that Sutskever who helped pioneer modern AI, was especially disgruntled. He had become fearful that the technology could wipe out humanity. He also believed that Altman was bad-mouthing the board to OpenAI executives. In October, Altman promoted another OpenAI researcher to the same level as Sutskever, who saw it as a slight. Sutskever told several board members that he might quit.

Q-Star secret AI project by Sam Altman is also another reason behind the current OpenAI leadership crisis. Former OpenAI employees have raised serious allegations against the organization’s CEO, Sam Altman and the secret project Q Star. These allegations include deceit, manipulation, and a shift towards a profit-driven model. The former OpenAI employees also alleged that the researchers were asked to delay reporting progress on specific “secret” research initiatives, which were later dismantled for failing to deliver sufficient results quickly enough. Those who questioned this practice were dismissed as “bad culture fits” and even terminated
