NVIDIA and California Introduce AI Training Program for Universities and Adult Education

The State of California and NVIDIA unveiled a first-of-its-kind project for AI education.

Through the provision of generative AI training tools to California’s universities, community institutions, and adult education programs, the public-private partnership advances the state’s objectives for workforce development and training.

According to Amy Tong, secretary of the California Government Operations Agency, “AI will continue to become more advanced and prominent in all sectors, and California has the responsibility to support and prepare our students and faculties. NVIDIA is a natural partner to prepare California’s workforce for the future, as the company leads the world in AI computing.”

Employing this effort, educators in California can obtain accreditation via the NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute University Ambassador Program. This program links educators with top-notch teaching kits, workshop materials, and cloud-based NVIDIA GPU-accelerated workstations.

The initiative can train working professionals who are expanding their skill set through community college or adult education courses, as well as full-time students who are about to enter the workforce, by equipping educators throughout the state with the knowledge and abilities to utilize the newest AI technologies and NVIDIA GPUs.

The state agencies are also investigating the possibility of providing students with practical experience in AI capabilities through internship and apprenticeship programs.

To increase the accessibility and comprehension of AI for students from diverse backgrounds, NVIDIA is already engaged in several programs throughout the state of California.

Students and professionals in biotechnology and life sciences, advanced manufacturing, media and entertainment, and other fields are benefiting from the company’s educational initiatives and industry-spanning partnerships as they become proficient in utilizing AI to support their work, increase productivity, and spur innovation.

The NVIDIA Omniverse development platform is being examined by San José State University as a potential means of enabling the development of digital twins, or three-dimensional virtual replicas of actual systems, for the city of San José. NVIDIA hosted scores of students for a full-day program that included tech demonstrations and conversations about career advice during the university’s annual Black Engineer Week in June.

NVIDIA is collaborating with schools in the University of California and California State University systems on many workforce, climate, and community-based projects. While one is working with California Black Media to train a massive language model on nearly a century of journalism by Black journalists in the state, another intends to train students on undersea data center technology.

Earlier this year, in San José, the NVIDIA GTC AI conference included a panel discussion about the need for fair access to AI education and resources, as well as many workshops for educators to explore how to incorporate generative AI and NVIDIA technology into their curricula.
