Microsoft OneDrive’s New Feature: Copilot for Interactive File Summaries

Microsoft 365 will roll out Copilot for Onedrive in April 2024 which will help users to retrieve the information from the files present in the drive quickly.

Microsoft 365 will unveil the Copilot for OneDrive in April 2024. This update will help users instantly search for information, saving a lot of time from the files available on Drive just by asking simple questions. Microsoft Copilot for OneDrive can be accessed directly in the file viewer in OneDrive, Microsoft Teams, and SharePoint, and directly in OneDrive for the web. Work and school customers can access it with a Copilot for Microsoft 365 license.

Examples of the work Copilot for OneDrive could be used for (List along with Prompt example are shared here)

  • To get information and insights from the files, ask simple prompts like “What were the total beverage sales last week? Put the responses in a table view by day. Or what are the pros and cons of Project Moonshot?”
  • To find files using natural language, use prompts “I’ve been on vacation for a week. Show me recent files on Project Moonshot. Or what files should I read to get started on Project SkyDance?”
  • To create outlines, tables, and FAQs from our content. Example Prompts: “Using the /sales-enablement.docx as a reference, create an outline of a sales pitch to a new customer. Or look at /proposal1.docx and /proposal2.docx and create a table outlining the differences in cost, milestones, and date of delivery.
  • To help improvise content by using prompts “  What suggestions do you have to improve the deck/new-sales-process.ppt? Or what improvements should I make to this selected file to prepare it for a leadership review?”
  • To generate file summaries, for example, “ Summarize long-industry-report.pdf,. List out its 3 main points and tell me about the industry’s risks and open questions.”

Copilot in OneDrive does not only search document files; it can also look through spreadsheets, presentations, and other files. Here is a list of types of files it could go through:

• Office documents: DOC, DOCX, PPT, PPTX, XLSX

• New Microsoft 365 formats: FLUID, LOOP

• Universal formats: PDF, TXT, RTF

• Web files: ASPX, HTM, HTML

• OpenDocument formats: ODT, ODP

Copilot on OneDrive can respond to questions asked in different languages, for example: English, Spanish, German, French, Japanese, Portuguese, Chinese (simplified), etc., and plans to add more languages with time.

Copilot for OneDrive will make the work much easier and smarter in the future, which will increase the productivity of the worker. These summaries generated by Copilot can be shared with colleagues to make tasks much easier by not diving deep into the document or presentation and having a brief overview at the top.
