Microsoft AI Chief Mustafa Suleyman Praises OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Discusses Future of AI and Regulation

At the Aspen Ideas Festival, Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, expressed admiration for Sam Altman of OpenAI, discussed Microsoft's AI strategies, and emphasized the importance of AI regulation and collaboration with China.

Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, expressed his admiration for Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. However, he avoided when asked about any potential for future relationships with OpenAI and discussed the benefits of Microsoft’s present AI status.

Suleyman stated “It is true that we have ferocious competition with them. They are an independent company. We don’t own or control them. We don’t even have any board members. So they do entirely their own thing. But we have a deep partnership. I’m very good friends with Sam, have huge respect and trust and faith in what they’ve done. And that’s how it’s going to roll for many, many years to come,”

Microsoft has already invested $10 billion in OpenAI, giving it a significant step in the company’s profit business and allowing it to use OpeAI’s features. This relationship is very crucial, as it benefits both Microsoft’s stakeholders and their customers as well.

Maybe it’s because I’m a Brit with European tendencies, but I don’t fear regulation in the way that sort of everyone seems to by default,” he said, describing all of this finger pointing by the former employees as a “healthy dialogue.” He added, “I think it’s a great thing that technologists and entrepreneurs and CEOs of companies like myself and Sam, who I love dearly and think is awesome” are talking about regulation. “He is not cynical, he is sincere. He believes it genuinely.”

Suleyman has been with the company for quite some time and founded DeepMind, an AI company that he later sold to Google in 2015, only to resign from the firm in 2022 after being accused of intimidating subordinates. He later moved to Greylock Partners, where he established Inflection AI to develop its chatbot. Microsoft attempted to woo Sam Altman last fall with the offer but was unsuccessful, ultimately securing Suleyman and much of Inflection in March. Formerly with Microsoft, Suleyman has been reviewing OpenAI code in his new position at the company.

OpenAI was created with the primary goal of working on the issue of AI safety and making sure an evil AI does not eliminate humanity. Suleyman himself has spoke of the risks associated with AI and produced a book on this subject in 2023. However, a group of former OpenAI employees recently penned a letter that gave details of their apprehension about the safety of AI being neglected by OpenAI and other similar corporations. Regarding this, Suleyman stated that he has confidence in Altman, but he also envisioned the need for regulations and a slower approach toward the use of AI.

Suleyman’s view on China and its AI

Suleyman also expressed opinions on other topics covering the AI race between China and the appropriateness of utilizing AI in schools. He advocated for partnership with China and warned against what he saw as a new Cold War mentality. He also proposed how it can be helpful in the classroom as a teacher assistant to help the verbal learning and live interactions. But he also talked about the risks of AI and suggested some restraint was required when it came to the technology.

Suleyman’s words help to expose the multifaceted interaction between AI businesses and the calls for regulation and protection measures in developing AI systems. Although he has confidence in Altman and the value that Microsoft gets from its association with OpenAI, he still recognizes the risks of AI and the necessity for more precautions.
