Meta’s Announced Collaboration with Wonik Robotics and GelSight: Empowering Robots with Human-Like Touch Through Digit 360

Meta has partnered with Wonik Robotics and GelSight to push robotic touch perception forward. Their collaboration aims to create advanced tactile sensors, enabling robots to "feel" and naturally interact with their surroundings. This initiative aligns with a broader goal of developing machine intelligence for deeper physical world understanding.

Recently, Meta announced collaborations with Wonik Robotics and GelSight to push forward the development of robotic touch perception technology. The goal of this partnership is to bring cutting-edge tactile sensors to market so that robots may interact with their surroundings more naturally and “feel” like humans. The development of advanced machine intelligence (AMI), which calls for robots to comprehend and engage with the physical environment, is the larger objective of this project.

What’s New:

Meta Sparsh, Meta Digit 360, and Meta Digit Plexus are some of the innovative technologies that have been unveiled by Meta’s Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) team. Robots will be able to do increasingly difficult jobs that call for fine motor abilities and touch perception because of these advancements in tactile sensing and dexterity. Furthermore, in an effort to commercialize these technologies and ease their entry into the scientific community, Meta has established strategic alliances with GelSight Inc. and Wonik Robotics.

Meta Sparsh is designed to work across multiple types of vision-based tactile sensors, enabling robots to comprehend tactile properties and perform dexterous planning. It is pre-trained on a dataset of over 460,000 tactile images, allowing it to outperform existing task-specific models significantly.

Meta Digit 360

The Digit 360 is a fingertip-shaped tactile sensor that captures detailed tactile data with human-like precision. It features over 18 sensing modalities, enabling it to detect minute changes in texture and pressure. This sensor can process information quickly due to its on-device AI capabilities, allowing robots to react promptly to stimuli.

Meta Digit Plexus

The Digit Plexus platform integrates various tactile sensors into a single robotic hand, facilitating seamless data collection and control. This standardized approach simplifies the development process for researchers looking to explore advanced touch perception in robotics.
