How does Google Cloud approach secure generative AI applications?

Google Cloud's new security measures for running generative AI applications, including Gemini's role in threat intelligence. Microsoft and Oracle are addressing AI-related cybersecurity risks.

Generative AI has sparked a new wave of cybersecurity concerns, with malicious actors increasingly leveraging this technology for nefarious purposes. At Google Cloud Next ’24 in Las Vegas, Google introduced robust security measures to address these challenges and ensure safer deployment of generative AI applications, and Gemini LLM played a central role in enhancing cybersecurity.

Google Cloud’s Gemini, a leading large language model (LLM), has expanded its role in security operations. The company is now integrating Gemini into various security services to enhance detection and response. A notable feature allows analysts to access the latest threat intelligence from Mandiant, Google Cloud’s cybersecurity consulting arm, guiding them through in-depth investigations.

To improve threat intelligence, Gemini offers conversational search across Mandiant’s database and integrates Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) reports for streamlined analysis. This integration provides insights into cloud misconfigurations, vulnerabilities, and attack paths, helping security teams maintain a robust security posture.

Google’s efforts to strengthen security are timely, considering the increasing prevalence of malware. According to The Data Security Council of India (DSCI), over half a million new malware programs are detected daily. By focusing on threat detection and response, Google Cloud aims to mitigate cybersecurity risks associated with generative AI.

Microsoft’s Approach to AI Security

Microsoft is also addressing cybersecurity concerns with its Security Copilot, launched to streamline threat intelligence and prioritize security incidents. Built on OpenAI’s GPT-4, Security Copilot claims to defend organizations at machine speed without compromising customer data. With CEO Satya Nadella’s emphasis on data protection and transparency, Microsoft is prioritizing customer trust while combating evolving cybersecurity threats.

Oracle’s Unique Security Approach

Oracle, a long-standing leader in data security, has gained traction among governments and enterprises due to its transparent cloud approach and robust data encryption. Oracle’s cloud infrastructure offers unique advantages, such as running on multiple hyperscale clouds, providing greater flexibility and security for enterprise customers.

The Challenges of Generative AI

Despite the promise of generative AI, LLMs like Google’s Gemini and Microsoft’s Security Copilot are susceptible to security vulnerabilities. Studies have shown that attackers can manipulate these models to leak sensitive data or generate harmful content. This vulnerability requires robust security measures to ensure the safe use of generative AI.

The Road Ahead for AI Security

Despite these challenges, AI has the potential to strengthen cybersecurity defence. As generative AI becomes more integrated into security operations, organizations must adopt AI-centric solutions to stay ahead of evolving threats. Google’s proactive measures and competitors’ innovative approaches underscore the industry’s commitment to ensuring the safety of generative AI applications.
