Anthropic Suggests a Novel Method of Integrating Data with AI Chatbots

Anthropic is putting up a new standard for integrating AI helpers with data storage systems.

Anthropic claims that the standard, known as the Model Context Protocol, or MCP for short, which it made publicly available today, may enable AI models to generate more accurate and pertinent answers to questions.

MCP enables models—any models, not only Anthropic’s—to pull information from content repositories, app development environments, and business tools and software to accomplish tasks.

Anthropic stated in a blog post that “the industry has heavily invested in model capabilities, achieving rapid advances in reasoning and quality as AI assistants gain mainstream adoption.” However, even the most advanced models are limited by their data isolation, being ensnared in outdated systems and information silos. Scaling truly connected systems is challenging because each new data source needs a unique implementation.

Through a framework that lets developers create two-way connections between data sources and AI-powered apps (like chatbots), MCP supposedly addresses this issue. Developers can create “MCP clients”—such as apps and workflows—that connect to those servers on command and disclose data through “MCP servers.”

According to Anthropic, development tooling companies Replit, Codeium, and Sourcegraph are incorporating MCP support into their platforms, while others like Block and Apollo have already included MCP into their systems.

“Developers can now build against a standard protocol instead of maintaining separate connectors for each data source,” Anthropic noted. “As the ecosystem develops, AI systems will preserve context while switching between various tools and data sets, substituting a more sustainable architecture for the fragmented integrations of today.”

Subscribers to Anthropic’s Claude Enterprise package can use MCP servers to link the company’s Claude chatbot to their internal systems, and developers can begin creating using MCP connectors right now. In addition to sharing prebuilt MCP servers for enterprise platforms like GitHub, Slack, and Google Drive, Anthropic promises to eventually offer toolkits for setting up production MCP servers that can accommodate whole companies.

Anthropic stated, “We’re dedicated to establishing MCP as a cooperative, open-source project and ecosystem.” “We encourage [developers] to collaborate in creating the future of context-aware AI.”

In principle, MCP seems like a decent idea. However, it is unlikely to acquire much popularity, especially from competitors like OpenAI, who would undoubtedly prefer that ecosystem partners and customers utilize their data-connecting methods and specifications.

Indeed, ChatGPT, OpenAI’s AI-powered chatbot platform, just gained a data-connecting function that enables ChatGPT to read code from dev-focused coding apps, which is comparable to the use cases MCP supports. Although it is seeking implementations with close partners rather than open-sourcing the underlying technology, OpenAI has stated that it intends to eventually expand the feature, known as Work with Apps, to other kinds of apps.

Furthermore, it is still unclear if MCP is as effective and advantageous as Anthropic says. For instance, MCP can help an AI bot “better retrieve relevant information to further understand the context around a coding task,” according to the business, but it provides no benchmarks to support this claim.
