Claude Artifacts: Key Features, How to Build and Use Cases for Developers, PM, Sales and more

Claude Artifacts are standalone, interactive pieces of content created by the Claude AI chatbot. Unlike how chatbots respond, short and part of the conversation, Artifacts are separate, complete units of content.

In late August 2024, AI startup Anthropic made Claude Artifacts fully available to all Claude users. The artifacts provide a wide range of functionalities and tools for developers, project managers, sales teams, and more.

“Artifacts turn conversations with Claude into a more creative and collaborative experience. With Artifacts, you have a dedicated window to instantly see, iterate, and build on the work you create with Claude,” Anthropic announced. Since its web view launch in June, Claude users have created more than tens of millions of Anthropic.

What are Claude Artifacts?

Claude Artifacts are standalone, interactive pieces of content created by the Claude AI chatbot. Unlike how chatbots respond, short and part of the conversation, Artifacts are separate, complete units of content. These can be anything from code to visual diagrams, interactive documents, or even full websites.

Key Features

Below are some of the key features of the Artifacts:

  • Detailed and Self-Contained: Artifacts are designed to exist independently from the broader conversation. They typically include content that exceeds 15 lines.
  • Editable and Iterative: Artifacts are highly customizable. You can make changes, iterate, and improve the Artifact you are working on.
  • Standalone: Each Artifact is detailed enough to stand alone without additional conversational context. This makes them easier to reuse, refer, and share.
  • Interactive: You can include structured documents, data visualizations, diagrams, and even interactive React components in Claude Artifacts.
  • Share and Remix: Another great feature of Claude Artifacts is the ability to share and remix them. Once an Artifact is created, you can click on the Publish button, to generate a shareable link. This allows teams to review, collaborate, or provide feedback on the content. Also, you can take an existing Artifact, modify it, and create a personalized version for your needs.

How to build artifacts?

Hers is a step-by-step guide on how to access and use Artifacts:

  • Go to the official website of Claude and log in, or sign up if you do not have an account.
  • Then, click on your initials in the lower left corner of the Claude interface.
  • Go to “Feature Preview” in the dropdown menu and toggle on the Artifacts feature.
  • Now, when you request complex or standalone content from Claude (such as code, diagrams, or a full Markdown document), the Artifact window will automatically open.
  • You can edit the artifact on the side panel in real time.
  • Based on your feedback, Claude will modify the artifact. Claude will automatically save every edit and you can also switch between each edit.
  • Apart from this, you can also handle several Artifacts within a single session. This comes in handy when you are managing complex projects involving multiple types of content.

What can you create?

Claude’s Artifacts are versatile and flexible tools that you can use in multiple ways. Here are some of them:

  • You can use them to produce Markdown or plain text documents. These are ideal for drafting reports, proposals, or structured text.
  • Artifacts can also generate visual representations of data using libraries like Plotly.js.
  • For design tasks, you can create scalable vector graphics (SVGs), such as logos. You can customize and refine them further in the Artifact window.
  • You can also generate HTML for single-page websites or multi-page web structures.
  • Artifacts support flowcharts, sequence diagrams, Gantt charts, and entity-relationship diagrams (ERD).
  • With Artifacts, you can generate ready-to-deploy code structures as well.

Use Cases

Here are the use cases of Claud Artifacts for developers and product managers:

1. Developers

  • Claude can help with the developer’s tasks related to coding, creating, or implementing algorithms.
  • For instance, a developer can request Claude to create a class in Python language which would assist in tackling the management of libraries, improve on the features, and later apply the last copy or download it.
  • Another task that can be done by Claude is the development of reusable UI components such as a react search bar that is dynamic and can speed up the addition of features or the development of new features.

2. Product Managers (PMs)

  • Project timelines can get quite complicated at times. PMs often need to ease the understanding of complex timelines or policies by producing flow charts, Gantt charts, and sequence diagrams.
  • With Artifacts, you can create and modify a draft for a product roadmap or project management plan multiple times. You can also edit and review document content in real-time.

3. Sales

  • Artifacts can assist salespeople in composing organized and comprehensible sales proposals or reports as a response to RFPs or before meeting clients to present well-written work.
  • Sales teams can use them to order visual charts that define sales heads, including sales cycles, sales predictions, and achievements.

4. Designers

  • Artifacts can be used to generate logos and diagrams as SVG can simplify designers’ work. They run directly into the Designer’s Artifact Window and build up from there.

Limitations and Drawbacks

Just like every other AI tool, Claude Artifacts has its limitations as well:

  • No Audio or Video Generation: For the time being, Artifacts can only handle text-based and visual content.
  • Cannot Execute Code: If you are generating a code using Claude, you have to run it externally.
  • No Access to External APIs or Real-Time Data: Another disadvantage is that Artifacts are based on internal data, with no real-time integration with external sources.
  • No File Uploads for Editing: Also, you cannot directly upload and modify external files in the Artifact window.

The Bottom Line

While Claude Artifacts are still in the early stages of development and have some limitations, they are some of the best and most unique features offered by a generative AI tool. With more development, we can expect Artifacts to become even more advanced and versatile.
