AI Robot Makes History: Climbs China’s Great Wall

AI-powered robot conquers the Great Wall of China. Advanced force control allows it to navigate uneven terrain with ease. Watch the climb & learn more about this technological marvel!

Humanoid robotics has come a long way in the last several years. Robots are becoming more and more proficient at a variety of jobs, which makes them ideal for both industrial and residential services.

The product of the China-based Robot Era has now proven its mettle by becoming the first humanoid to scale China’s Great Wall.

The 1.65-meter-tall full-sized humanoid prototype XBot-L is seen in a Robot Era movie strolling along parts of the Great Wall, greeting people, demonstrating some martial arts techniques, and engaging in various other actions.

The Robot Era team wanted to show XBot-L’s ability to move around, be nimble, and balance itself thanks to intelligent reinforcement learning algorithms.

For a bipedal humanoid robot, the Great Wall of China’s worn stone walls, uneven pavement, and gloomy archways provide a substantial challenge.

In such conditions, wheeled robots or humanoid models lacking sophisticated kinematic support typically encounter difficulties since they frequently trip over potholes in lengthy staircases or uneven terrain.

It appears that the Great Wall of China’s path was only slightly traversed by the XBot-L. It appears like it may have made a few mistakes while attempting to finish the route because of its missing leg covers and the duct tape around its waist.

It is nonetheless admirable, that XBot-L gets over challenges thanks to its sophisticated perceptive reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms. Thanks to these advancements, the robot can sense its environment, stay balanced, and adjust its gait and walking pace to ensure safe navigation even in these difficult circumstances.

As the robot navigates uncharted territory, sensitive reinforcement learning algorithms support its ability to perceive and make decisions. Thus, the robot can identify intricate road conditions and promptly modify its walking stance, according to a statement from Yue Xi, co-founder of Robot Era.

Recently, Robot Era has debuted Xhand, a very skilled hand made specifically for embodied AI applications.

The Institute of Cross-disciplinary Information Sciences at Tsinghua University in Beijing is the incubator for the startup Robot Era. The company’s website states that it has developed a humanoid robot body using proprioceptive actuators, demonstrating substantial progress in the field of embodied general intelligence.

“Our robot exhibits superior traversability and stability on complex surfaces when compared to ‘blind walking,'” Xi stated.

While its XBot-L is excellent for a young robotics startup, Boston Dynamics’ Atlas humanoid, and other Chinese companies Unitree’s offerings are speedier and more versatile.
