Generative artificial intelligence, or Gen AI, has undeniably become a huge part of the digital infrastructure. From education to health, it is everywhere. At present, the impact of Gen AI cannot be underestimated, even when it is a developing technology. 

So, the World Economic Forum (WEF) has been actively involved in developing frameworks for managing genAI, such as the Presidio AI Framework and the Data Equity initiative. So, they conducted research on generative AI to see how it is impacting different sectors, such as health, education, finance, and more.

World Economic Forum Report: 10 Key Points

Here are the ten key points of the report: 

1. Better AI governance

The rapid development of generative AI (genAI) calls for responsible governance. The governance has lagged behind the development of these tech-advanced tools. So, the World Economic Forum’s AI Governance Alliance is working on frameworks like the Presidio AI Framework to ensure genAI is used responsibly, avoiding risks such as hallucinations, misuse, and lack of traceability.

2. Importance of data equity

Generative artificial intelligence must be developed and deployed equitably. Data equity involves fair representation, access, and outcomes. It seeks to enshrine justice, non-discrimination, transparency, and inclusive participation in AI development.

3. Social innovation

When governed ethically, generative AI has the power to drive social innovation and contribute to shaping societies in positive ways. Responsible AI can become a force for good. The social economy comprises 7% of the global GDP, and generative AI could potentially increase its annual value by between $182 billion and $308 billion.

4. Media and trust

The global media sector has witnessed a steep decline in public trust. Hence, it is imperative for them to manage AI responsibly to avoid further loss of credibility. Gen AI is a powerful tool. If used in a harmful manner, it could exacerbate the issue of misinformation and further erode trust in media institutions. Hence, Media institutions must have transparency, accountability, and better AI skills in the industry.

5. Investors and responsible AI

Investors hold a key influence over the ethical deployment of gen AI. AI must be “honest, helpful, and harmless.” There is a need for responsible use of AI for sustainable returns.

6. AI in education

Generative AI holds the power to transform education. It can personalize learning based on the learner’s needs and help alleviate teacher shortages. However, responsible deployment is necessary to ensure fairness and accessibility.

7. Job creation and displacement

Unemployment is already a staggering issue for the global economies and AI has already been displaced to replace millions of jobs.  While generative AI will displace some jobs, it is expected to create many more new roles. And it is very necessary to prepare a workforce for these opportunities. 

8. Healthcare and AI

Healthcare is one of the sectors where AI can improve the workload and make it more efficient. Gen AI can enhance healthcare by providing accurate information, supporting patient care, and improving condition management. WEF says that there is a need for enhanced use of AI through “multilateral partnerships across health systems, consumers, governments and civil society.”

9. Scientific breakthroughs

Deep learning and generative artificial intelligence are revolutionizing scientific research by speeding up discoveries that were previously impossible. AI’s computational power is transforming how scientific questions are explored and answered. It can predict diseases, map out ocean beds, conduct complex simulations, and assist in drug discovery. 

10. Manufacturing and the Fourth Industrial Revolution

Gen AI is deeply impacting manufacturing. The leading companies in the Global Lighthouse Network are using genAI to improve their operations. In order to do so, they are training their employees on new skills and adopting new technologies.
