What is GPT-4 Turbo in the OpenAI API? How To Access It?

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, announced a new model for ChatGPT to provide an updated database of information and better output. This includes a creator tool for chatbots called GPTs (short for generative pre-trained transformers), and a new model for ChatGPT, called GPT-4 Turbo. Read this article to know all about accessing and using the most capable and improved model of OpenAI.

What is GPT-4 Turbo?

GPT-4 Turbo is the latest generation model. This large multimodal model is more capable, has an updated knowledge cutoff of April 2023, and introduces a 128k context window (the equivalent of 300 pages of text in a single prompt). The model is also 3X cheaper for input tokens and 2X cheaper for output tokens compared to the original GPT-4 model. The maximum number of output tokens for this model is 4096.

Functions Of GPT-4 Turbo

  • The latest GPT-4 Turbo model is available with vision capabilities. Vision requests can now use JSON mode and function calling. Currently points to gpt-4-turbo-2024-04-09.
  • GPT-4 Turbo preview model is intended to reduce cases of “laziness” where the model doesn’t complete a task. Returns a maximum of 4,096 output tokens.
  • The preview model features improved instruction following, JSON mode, reproducible outputs, parallel function calling, and more. Also, it returns a maximum of 4,096 output tokens.
  • The new seed parameter enables reproducible outputs by making the model return consistent completions most of the time.

How can I get access to it?

This model is available for use by anyone with an OpenAI API account and active GPT-4 access. Also, by providing GPT-4 Turbo as the model name in the API, users can access the most recent version of the model.

What are the rate limits? Can I get an increase?

GPT-4 Turbo is available for all paying developers to try by passing gpt-4-1106-preview in the API. OpenAI further plans to release the stable, production-ready model in the coming weeks.

Other than this, OpenAI is releasing a new version of GPT-3.5 Turbo that supports a 16K context window by default. The new 3.5 Turbo supports JSON mode, parallel function calling, and enhanced instruction following. As an example, our internal assessments reveal a 38% improvement in format following tasks, including YAML, XML, and JSON generation. By using the API, developers can obtain this new model by invoking gpt-3.5-turbo-1106. Up to June 13, 2024, older models can still be accessed by passing gpt-3.5-turbo-0613 through the API.
