Tesla to Run Smaller Native Version of xAI’s Grōk Using Local Compute Power

Elon Musk-led xAI has introduced its first product, an AI chatbot named “Grok.” Musk hinted at the possibility of Tesla vehicles natively running a smaller version of Grōk using their onboard computing power. While the specific applications of Grōk in Tesla vehicles remain unclear, it could potentially replace the current voice command system.

The post that caught Musk’s attention mentioned the incorporation of a quantized version of the AI model Grōk that would run on Tesla’s local computing power. Musk claimed that Teslas could have the world’s largest usable inference computer, provided their AI computers can run the Grōk model. Grōk’s SuperPrompt context window is rumoured to have a 25,000-character limit and could offer access to live content via X.

Additionally, xAI plans to release an application programming interface (API) for Grōk, making it more accessible for developers to integrate into various applications. Grōk is expected to have capabilities in both audio and image recognition.

The release of Grōk comes shortly after Musk launched xAI, positioning it as a competitor to OpenAI, and marks the company’s first software release. Grōk will be made available to X users who subscribe to the company’s Premium Plus tier for a monthly fee of $16. The exact timeline for when Grōk will be accessible to Premium Plus users remains uncertain, but Musk suggested that it would be offered “as soon as it’s out of early beta.”

In the realm of hiring, xAI is actively recruiting professionals in AI engineering, data engineering, full-stack web engineering, and infrastructure engineering, signifying its commitment to expanding its operations.

Furthermore, in an intriguing development, Elon Musk and xAI claimed that Grōk outperforms OpenAI’s ChatGPT in several academic tests. They emphasised Grōk’s real-time knowledge of the world via the X platform, positioning it as a unique and capable AI chatbot. Grok-1, the engine powering Grōk, outperformed ChatGPT-3.5 in various academic tests related to mathematics and coding. However, it did not surpass OpenAI’s most advanced version, GPT-4, in any of these tests.

Notably, Grōk’s price is set at $16 per month for X Premium Plus subscribers, although its availability is currently limited to users in the United States. Grōk is described as a “very early beta product” that will continuously improve, with xAI implementing additional safety measures to prevent malicious use.

The xAI team has expressed their commitment to ensuring that AI remains a positive force, with a focus on developing safeguards against potential malicious applications. They see AI as a significant contributor to scientific and economic value in society and aim to harness its potential responsibly.

Overall, xAI’s launch of Grōk, with its unique capabilities and integration with Tesla vehicles, represents an important step in the evolution of artificial intelligence and its role in enhancing various aspects of our lives.
