Rohan Gupta already had a knack for business. He revealed that when he was 10, he helped his mother sell silk pillowcases that she brought from India. In 2017, he earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He then pursued a Master’s degree in computer science from the same university in 2018. Rohan Gupta and his friends Anil Jason and Dave Silin started QuillBot in 2017, with one aim in mind, to make “writing painless.” Gupta currently serves as the CEO of this AI startup. 

Gupta revealed, in an interview with Nesslabs, that he and Jason, both pursuing independent startups at the time, first connected at a startup accelerator. He described the initial version of QuillBot as “janky.” He launched the demo of the tool on Reddit and garnered positive feedback because of its novel concept, that appealed to writers who use English as a second language. 

Following the overwhelmingly positive feedback, Gupta and the other co-founders implemented a premium subscription model and bootstrapped the business to over a million monthly active users before seeking venture capital funding.

In 2022, QuillBot acquired over 150 million users and is a widely used tool. Students and English Language Learners (ELLs) are the top users of this platform. In August 2023, it was announced that Course Hero, an American Ed-Tech website, had acquired QuillBot.
