Born on November 17, 1968, Robin Li Yanhong is a famous Chinese software engineer and billionaire entrepreneur. He is the mastermind behind China’s digital revolution. As the co-founder, chairman, and CEO of Baidu, his legacy is etched in the country’s internet dominance. 

In 2001, he was honored as one of the “Chinese Top Ten Innovative Pioneers“. He also held consecutive titles for being among the “IT Ten Famous Persons” in both 2002 and 2003. Also, in  2004, he got recognition as one of ten outstanding young people who showed their skills in software from China called “Chinese Software Ten Outstanding Young Persons”. He was also recognized as one of the “CCTV 2005 Chinese Economic Figures of The Year” in 2005.

In 1991, Robin Li pursued a Bachelor of Management, specializing in information management, at Peking University. Then, he embarked on his doctoral journey in computer science at the University at Buffalo in New York, starting in the fall of the same year. However, he concluded his studies with a master’s degree in 1994. He left the doctoral program the same year.

After completing his master’s degree, Li became a part of IDD Information Services, a division of Dow Jones and Company based in New Jersey. During his tenure there, he contributed to the development of a software program tailored for The Wall Street Journal’s online edition. 

Also, he worked on refining search engine algorithms. His association with IDD Information Services lasted for three years. 

While at IDD, in 1996, Li pioneered the Rankdex site-scoring algorithm, a significant advancement in search engine page ranking. Between 1997 and 1999, he worked as a staff engineer at Infoseek, a famous internet search engine firm.

In 2000, Robin Li and Eric Xu co-founded Baidu, which would go on to become China’s largest search engine. 

Baidu’s IPO on NASDAQ was successfully completed on 5 August 2005. By 2007 it became a part of the NASDAQ-100 Index, the first Chinese company to do so.
