GPT-4o vs GPT-4 Turbo: How New ChatGPT is Better than Existing Models?

GPT-4o is OpenAI's new model that can reason across audio, vision, and text in real-time. It is especially better at vision and audio understanding compared to existing models. Read this article to know about the differences between GPT-4o and GPT Turbo.

GPT-4o and GPT-4 Turbo are the two most advanced tools of OpenAI. While both aim to enhance the advancement of technology, they may differ in several key features. The latest brainchild of OpenAI matches GPT-4 Turbo performance on text in English and code, with significant improvement on text in non-English languages, while also being much faster and 50% cheaper in the API.

Read this article to explore the fundamental differences between GPT-4o and GPT-4 Turbo, helping you understand their unique features and functionalities.

About GPT-4o and GPT-4 Turbo

GPT-4 Turbo: GPT-4 Turbo is a large multimodal model that is more capable and has an updated knowledge cutoff of April 2023. It introduces a 128k context window (the equivalent of 300 pages of text in a single prompt). The model is also 3X cheaper for input tokens and 2X cheaper for output tokens compared to the original GPT-4 model. The maximum number of output tokens for this model is 4096.

GPT-4 Turbo performs better than our previous models on tasks that require the careful following of instructions, such as generating specific formats. It also supports our new JSON mode, which ensures the model will respond with valid JSON.

This model is available for use by anyone with an OpenAI API account and active GPT-4 access. Also, by providing GPT-4 Turbo as the model name in the API, users can access the most recent version of the model.

What is GPT-4 Turbo in the OpenAI API? How To Access It?

GPT-4o: GPT-4o is the new flagship model of OpenAI. It provides GPT-4-level intelligence but is much faster and improves on its capabilities across text, voice, and vision. GPT-4o is the first model to combine all of these modalities, better than any existing model at understanding and discussing the images you share.

GPT-4o is trained as a single new model end-to-end across text, vision, and audio, meaning that all inputs and outputs are processed by the same neural network. There will be a limit on the number of messages that free users can send with GPT-4o based on usage and demand.

This latest OpenAI model will be available in the free tier and to Plus users with up to 5x higher message limits. Also, the new version of Voice Mode with GPT-4o in alpha within ChatGPT Plus will roll out in the coming weeks.

Which One Is Better GPT-4o and GPT Turbo?

Choosing between GPT-4o and GPT Turbo depends on your needs. GPT Turbo is readily available, affordable, and excels in English text and coding. Whereas, GPT-4o is faster, understands images, and might handle non-English languages better. However, it’s still in preview, potentially more expensive, and access is limited.

On the other hand, GPT-4o might be a better option due to its larger context window and potential for advanced instruction. However, if your project involves multiple languages and images or is on the bleeding edge of AI, GPT-4o is worth the potential wait and cost increase. Otherwise, GPT Turbo remains a solid choice.
