But first, let’s learn what Midjourney is.

What Is OpenAI Sora? How To Use It?

What is Midjourney?

Midjourney is a generative AI art generator that can create stunning images from text-based input. This cutting-edge tool harnesses the power of artificial intelligence to translate your imaginative descriptions into visually captivating masterpieces.

By simply inputting a description or prompt, Midjourney uses its advanced algorithms to generate unique and realistic images. The best part is that you do not need to be an artist or a tech-savvy person to be able to use Midjourney to create AI images.

But, how do you use Midjourney to create images? Let’s get to it.

How to use Midjourney?

Using Midjourney is not quite as simple as DALL-E or Stable Diffusion. You cannot download it on your computer or open it on your browser. Midjourney is only available to use via Discord. Sounds pretty weird, right? However, the quality output produced by this generative AI far surpasses its ease of access. So, here is a step-by-step guide on how to use Midjourney:

Step 1: Create an account on Discord

Midjourney operates through a private server on Discord, a free communication platform. Here is what you need to get started:

  • Discord Account: Head over to https://discord.com/ and create a free Discord account (if you do not have one already). You will need a verified email address to join the Midjourney server.
  • Midjourney Beta Access: Now, visit https://www.midjourney.com/ and sign up for the Midjourney beta. This will grant you access to the Discord server once approved.

Step 2: Join the Midjourney Server

Once your Midjourney beta access is approved, you will receive an email with an invitation link to the Midjourney Discord server. Click the link and follow the on-screen instructions to join.

Step 3: Navigate the Server Channels

Once, you have joined the Midjourney server, you will need to learn to navigate the multiple channels. Do not get overwhelmed by it. Though using Discord might seem (if you are a newbie) like a daunting task at first, but its pretty simple, once you get the hang of it. On the left side of the screen, you will find all of the available channels. You will need to go to the #newbies-XX” (where XX is a number) channel to create your images. These are designated channels for newcomers to experiment with Midjourney.

Step 4: Write your Prompt

This is where the magic begins. Your prompt is essentially a detailed description that tells Midjourney what you want it to create. Here are some tips for crafting effective prompts:

  • Be Specific: The more details you provide, the better Midjourney can understand your vision.
  • Use Descriptive Language: Do not just say “a cat.” Describe the breed, fur color, pose, and environment.
  • Reference Existing Art Styles: Mention specific artistic styles like “Van Gogh” or “surreal” to guide Midjourney’s interpretation.
  • Use Keywords: Include relevant keywords like “realistic,” “dreamlike,” or “photorealistic” to refine the image.

Step 5: Using the “/imagine” Command

In a “#newbies-XX” channel, type the command “/imagine” and a dialogue box will appear above it. Click on it and then write your prompt. Be as descriptive as you can. Hit Enter, and Midjourney will spring into action. It will generate four unique images based on your prompt.

Step 6: Refine and Re-roll (Optional)

Once your image is generated, you have the option to refine and re-roll.

  • Refine: Like the results but want some tweaks? Click the “V” buttons below each image to suggest variations based on the chosen image.
  • Re-roll: Are the images not quite what you envisioned? Click the refresh symbol below the images to generate a completely new set of images based on the same prompt.

Step 7: Saving Your Images

Once you have an image you love, right-click it and choose “Save Image” to download it to your computer. You can post it on social media or make it your wallpaper, the choice is yours.

Important Note: Midjourney is no longer free to use anymore. There are four types of subscriptions available for Midjourney. The basic plan is $8 per month, whereas the mega plan is $96 per month.

Enhance Your Midjourney Experience

Beyond the basic steps, Midjourney offers additional functionalities to take your creations to the next level. Let’s learn about some of them:

  • You can add another layer of detail by including reference images as part of your prompt. All you need to do is simply paste the image URL directly into your prompt. You can also upload images through Discord and drag them into your prompt for automatic URL addition.
  • While written prompts are powerful, Midjourney allows you to use specific parameters to control aspects like aspect ratio, randomness, and style.
    • Use the –no parameter followed by the element you want to exclude.
    • Try the –weird parameter (still experimental) to nudge Midjourney towards more unusual interpretations.
    • A comprehensive list of parameters and their functionalities can be found in the Midjourney documentation.
  • Want to reduce the length of your prompt? Use the /shorten command followed by your prompt. Midjourney will analyze your text and suggest shorter versions, focusing on the most significant elements.
