Hassabis’s journey begins in North London, where he was born to a Greek Cypriot father and a Chinese Singaporean mother. He was a child prodigy in chess from the age of 4, captained England’s junior chess teams, and reached master standard by 13. Later, Hassabis went to Queen Elizabeth’s School in Barnet and was also homeschooled. 

He then enrolled in Christ’s College, Finchley, where he completed A-levels and scholarship exams at the age of 15–16.

His journey into the world of computing began when he bought his first computer, a ZX Spectrum 48K. When he was 17, he joined Bullfrog Productions and co-designed the groundbreaking simulation game, “Theme Park,” which turned out to be a massive success. 

After that, he left Bullfrog. The game’s success funded his university education at Queens’ College, Cambridge, where he graduated with a Double First in Computer Science in 1997.

Post graduation, he joined as the lead AI programmer at Lionhead Studios, working on the 2001 game “Black & White.” In 1998, he founded Elixir Studios, where he navigated the gaming industry and later transitioned to academia, obtaining a PhD in cognitive neuroscience from University College London (UCL) in 2009.

In 2010, Hassabis, Shane Legg, and Mustafa Suleyman, co-founded DeepMind, a startup aiming to “solve intelligence” through AI. Some of its most significant breakthroughs include Deepmind AlphaGo’s win over world champion Lee Sedol, advancements in AI safety, and groundbreaking work in protein folding.
