Alexander Caedmon Karp was born October 2, 1967, in New York City, but was raised in Philadelphia. He graduated from Central High School in 1985. Karp says that he has struggled with dyslexia, a learning disorder, ever since he was young. 

In 1989, Karp received a bachelor’s degree from Haverford College (Haverford, Pennsylvania), and in 1992, he got a juris doctorate (JD) from Stanford Law School. Karp then studied further and received a PhD in neoclassical social theory from Goethe University Frankfurt in 2002.

Alex Karp’s career began as a research associate at the Sigmund Freud Institute in Frankfurt, Germany. For his PhD, he studied under prominent 20th-century philosopher Jurgen Habermas at the University of Frankfurt. 

After obtaining his doctorate, he received an inheritance from his grandfather and started investing it in startups and stocks. High net-worth individuals sought his services, leading him to set up the London-based Caedmon Group, a reference to his middle name, and the first known English-language poet.

A year later, Thiel hired Joe Lonsdale and Stephen Cohen, two graduates from Stanford University, and Nathaniel Greetings, PayPal’s engineer. Karp helped attract a few European angel investors, however, American investors seemed disinterested in the company and its cause. It all changed when In-Q-Tel, the venture arm of the CIA, invested more than $2 million in two rounds of investment.
