Pragya Misra has been appointed OpenAI’s head of government relations in India. As countries figure out how to regulate AI, the company's new hire demonstrates that they are working to get favourable rules for the technology. Read this article to know more about Pragya and her background.

OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, has hired its first employee in India. According to Bloomberg, Pragya Misra, the government relations head amid the ongoing elections, will shape AI regulations in the country.

The Microsoft Corporation-backed company has hired Pragya Misra to oversee public policy affairs and partnerships in India. Read this article to know about Pragya Misra, the first Indian to be part of the AI-based giant company.

Who is Pragya Misra?

Pragya Misra is a graduate with an MBA from the International Management Institute in 2012. She earned a commerce degree from Delhi University and completed a Diploma in Bargaining and Negotiations from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

The 39-year old Pragya has served as the Director of Public Affairs for Truecaller, where she has collaborated closely with government ministries, investors, key stakeholders, and media partners.

Before Truecaller, she worked with Meta Platforms for three years. It was here that Misra led WhatsApp’s campaign against misinformation in 2018. Also, she was WhatsApp’s first employee in India, according to the news agency.

Pragya Misra is expected to commence her role at OpenAI by the end of this month.

OpenAI is also looking to set up a local team in India. India is a sizable market with enormous growth potential, but it is challenging because domestic businesses are protected by local laws.  “The hiring highlights the generative-AI company’s efforts to push for favourable rules as governments around the world consider how to regulate the rapidly developing technology,” a Bloomberg report states.

However, OpenAI doesn’t have an official base in India yet, except for a trademark they got this month. When CEO Sam Altman visited New Delhi in June last year during his global tour, he met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and had a positive conversation, but there were no announcements from Altman or OpenAI during the two-day visit.
